Today in Geneva, our Executive Secretary, Mr Piotr Dmochowski-Lipski, took part in the commemorations marking the 15th anniversary of the Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development. Since its establishment in 2010 by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and UNESCO, the Broadband Commission has worked to place universal broadband connectivity at the centre of global policy agendas and to advance digital inclusion worldwide.
Bringing together over 50 high-level leaders from the public and private sectors, the Commission develops practical, sustainable policy recommendations aimed at accelerating progress toward the UN 2030 Agenda and the Commission’s seven Advocacy Targets. The anniversary meeting offered Commissioners an important moment to reflect on achievements to date and to identify areas where further action is needed.
To mark its 15th anniversary, the Commission released in June 2025 the first instalment of the “State of Broadband 2025” report, its annual flagship publication. Analysing global progress towards achieving the Commission’s seven Advocacy Targets, the Report showed gains in mobile affordability, digital skills, and gender parity while challenges persist around fixed broadband affordability, rural connectivity, and the digital capabilities of smaller enterprises.
With 2.6 billion people worldwide still lacking internet access, the Commissioners reaffirmed their shared commitment to advancing inclusive and affordable broadband for and ensure that no one is left behind in the digital era.
