EUTELSAT
was created as an Intergovernmental Organisation in 1977 and
established Europe’s first satellite telecommunications
system. The Organisation developed its activities to include
the provision of services for basic telephony, analogue and
digital television and radio broadcasting, business telecommunications,
multimedia, messaging, positioning and access to broadband.
In
2001, in response to regulatory, economic and technological
developments in the satellite telecommunications sector, the
Organisation was transformed. On 2 July of this year, all the
assets, operational activities and related obligations of the
Intergovernmental Organisation were transferred to Eutelsat
S.A., a company established for this purpose and operating under
French law.
The
EUTELSAT Intergovernmental Organisation today consists of 49
European member states and its main role is to ensure that Eutelsat
S.A. observes the four basic principles as shown in the Amended
EUTELSAT Convention.
